While the Galaxy S9 was pretty much a carbon copy of the Galaxy S8 before it, despite rumours that it would boast significantly smaller bezels, it looks like Samsung has been saving these big upgrades for its 10th anniversary Galaxy S release.
The Structure Sensor is an attachment to an iPad, but also works with non-iPad tablets, iPhones, and can be modified to work with standalone applications. It contains two infrared LEDs, an infrared structured light projector, and an infrared camera.? The Structure projects a unique infrared pattern of dots out in front of it, and the infrared camera captures the projected pattern as it is reflected off of objects. Apparent variations in the position of the captured dots are interpreted by software to determine the relative position of a captured image. The graphic below, by Paul Kah of the?Lappeenranta University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, illustrates the technique in a cartoon.
Enter modern 3D printing: Businesses now have the ability to design a part, manufacture it in-house on a professional 3D printer, and then test it, all in the space of a few days (and sometimes even less). This means that the time needed to effectively prototype a part from start to finish has been decimated to almost nothing!
The new 3D scanners were not the only products Shining 3D introduced last week; the company also has new software to offer. The EXScan Pro software features a brand new user interface and work flow that is easy to use regardless of experience level – it’s as easy as taking a video, according to Shining 3D. A new operation mode allows for a faster scanning experience during operation; users can then set the resolution option later during data processing. The software is compatible with several file types including STL, OBJ, PLY, ASC, P3 and 3MF.
Before I send this printer off to it’s ultimate destination, It seems a shame not to print out an All-American Giant Isopod at glorious, full, 1:1 scale. So that’s what we’re doing.
The S10+ also has two front-facing cameras (the second being a depth sensor) compared to the standard phone’s single selfie camera. This means the hole-punch cut-out is larger on the S10+, eating up more screen space.
The 3-D printing revolution heralded a few years ago never arrived. There are not printers in every home or on every desk. One of the largest of the public 3-D printer makers, $1.3 billion (market cap) 3D Systems, has lost more than 85% of its value since January 2014, when its stock hit a high of $97. It recently traded around $11. ?
The other three Galaxy S10 models won’t be quite so ridiculously-specced, as the WSJ reports that they’ll offer screens between 5in and 5.4in, and will offer between three and five cameras.?However, the?handsets might add a reverse wireless charging feature that would allow the handsets to wirelessly juice other devices,?similar to Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro.
Structure Sensor + itSeez3D – Using itSeez3D’s iPad scanning app paired with occipital’s Structure Sensor, a 3D scanning camera for mobile devices, allows you to capture people and other objects simply by recording and walking around the subject. As you walk around the subject pointing the Structure Sensor at the subject, an overlaid 3D representation of the subject gets filled out in real time. The experience feels very futuristic and impressive until you get the final output back. Unless you use it in a perfectly lit, empty studio with an excellent model the results are fairly imperfect and might require touching up in a 3D modeling application. This is the most expensive option at $500 for the sensor and at least $399 for an iPad mini, so I would only recommend this if you already have 3D modeling skills and a space to scan in.
Scoobe3D is a novel 3D Scanning technology that is now available on Kickstarter. Scoobe3D aims to make 3D scanning and easy to use technology that can let anyone get accurate handheld scans. 3D scanning has been around for decades but the technology is clunky, expensive and often requires many repeat scans to get a file right. Enterprise customers can use high-end scanning equipment butt often this costs hundreds of thousands of Dollars. Even then different scanners are suited for different applications. Some scanners are good at scanning as long as the object isn’t shiny or require you to place stickers all over the object for them to work. Make one false move and you have to start all over again. Other scanning rigs fill rooms or require complex turntable devices. 3D scanning, even when it does work well, often requires a lot of clean up of the files in CAD. Most users want 3D scanning because the objects they want to scan are very complex to do in CAD so this undermines the entire purpose of scanning it. The dream of 3D scanning is still far ahead of the current finicky capabilities, however. Even high-end systems are complex to use and require a lot of skill, often specific to that scanning technology. There are some low-cost 3D scanning options out there but often they require a lot of hand-holding, literally and figuratively.
3D printing is also used to create rough or porous surfaces for dental implants. LayerWise, a company in Belgium, 3D printed a lower jaw?for an 83-year-old?woman’s face. They made the implant out of titanium powder and then 3D printed it using laser technology.
